Why am I running as an independent for a congressional seat in the new 19th district in New York State? Because like you, I am displeased by professional politicians making ineffective legislation which does not reflect the everyday man and woman. We need a voice in congress that is outside the established Washington bubble. I want to be that voice.

Five Days to Go..
The countdown to Election Day is getting closer; just five more days. I hope you are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The Republicans are already threatening to shut down the government, assuming they take the Senate.A shutdown is a very dangerous game. The political extremism in both the Senate and the House of Representatives illustrates just how important it is to vote for an Independent. I will work both sides of the aisle in order to begin to disable this problem. It should be a concern for ALL! Remember, this November 4th, to go down the Congressional line (REPRESENTATIVE IN CONGRESS) and WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS in the space provided; let your VOTE make a difference ! I will be working for you!
Me and My Ballot - Write me In!
Please view my newest video on how you can write my in on your ballot on Tuesday so I can represent you in Congress.

Don't Worry, We're Republicans!
During the 2012 campaign , I attended the third debate in Oneonta, New York. I did not participate; but I certainly listened. Upon taking my seat, an older couple addressed me and said,"don't worry we're Republicans." Some time has gone by since then, and I am worried. The Republicans managed to shut down the government wasting assets (to me a person is an asset) and money, billions of it; voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act over fifty times, failed to act on domestic legislation , failed to look at infrastructure legislation. Dysfunction, obstruction, call it whatever you would like; it simply has to stop; Republicans and Democrats are counting on you to do the same old thing; if you vote the same old way, nothing is going to change. Effective change begins with you! A change of attitude and a change in the way you vote. I sincerely believe that I can win this election. Republicans, Democrats, and those of you who are not affiliated with any party; join with me and say:" I am just plain sick and tired of this mess in Washington". Let your vote make a difference...WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS FOR CONGRESS! I have worn out my boots working and I will wear out my dress shoes working for you in the halls of Congress.

Water, water everywhere ..not a drop to Drink
Can you imagine if you did not have access to drinkable water? Did you know that there are 1.9 billion people who do not have potable water or access to sanitation; that is one-sixth of the world's population. There are better ways to use the money wasted in political campaigns. I believe that if the electorate begins to say NO; politicians will begin to listen. Vote them out! There is an alternative to Democrats and Republicans. This November 4th, go down the Congressional line and WRITE-In THOM JENKINS . Money should not buy representation!

Tons of Money
It is amazing that this year, according to some news analysts, there has been over 230 million dollars in negative campaign advertisements against Mr. Obama and the poor guy is not even running. Okay, he is not winning the popularity contest ; and things have not been going that great for the majority of us. It is not exactly his fault alone. Elections are won and lost on the issues; Republicans and Democrats have pretty clear views. Nevertheless, it is always party politics; it is just a vicious cycle.Probably the most significant issue is the amount of money that has been spent during this election cycle, nearly 3.4 billion dollars. It is really obscene! All that money being pumped into the media campaigns proves to me that one is just as bad as the other. This kind of money can certainly be used for better purposes. There has got to be a better way! Insert an Independent into Congress. this election cycle. This November 4th, WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS on the Congressional line; I promise to fight tooth and nail for campaign reform and to end the influence of money in OUR government.
Somebody Else is Listening Too and It is Not The Good Guys
Do you remember Jimmy Carter on a news program, some decades ago speaking about a military operation that was going to Iran to rescue the 52 hostages. Do you remember what happened? I do not have to remind you. The media sometimes talks too much about the wrong subjects. The media reports a man has breached the security at the White House; they put a map on national television. They talk about American tactics protecting our assets abroad; they talk about how to take out Apache helicopters and make suggestions on how to attack commercial aircraft. Do you think that the "enemy" is not listening? The big one, of course, is discussing the topic of no boots on the ground ; constantly broadcasting this issue sends a poor message to our allies, whether it is true or not or simply inevitable; it demoralizes our allies and enhances the enemy's motivation. Be careful what you broadcast ; we do not what your words to haunt us or harm us in any way!

The End in Afghanistan?
Today marked the end for both British and American military serviceman and women in Afghanistan .After thirteen years of chasing the Taliban all over that country ,trying to limit their influence over the populous and inserting democratic values, America finally withdraws leaving behind 240 million dollars worth of armaments to the Afghan military and a questionable government. Hopefully, the United States will not be faced with another Iraqi type situation. The former president was very corrupt (Mr. Karzi); he and his family stole millions. The lives of our brave servicemen and our brave N.A.T.O allies, as well as the heroic thousands who are permanently injured, leave an indelible picture in my mind as to the sacrifice they made. We cannot thank them enough. With a "war" raging against Islamic extremism in Syria, Iraq and other countries around the globe, and the insertion of recent events; we, as a nation, must reassess our foreign policy. We must acknowledge that the world is an ever changing and much more closely knit scene. We cannot simply choose our allies and isolate our enemies; we MUST address the shortcomings of the past and substitute real and lasting solutions so that we can end the inequality that divides the world as a whole. We must seek intelligent solutions to end extremism and the destruction of so many lives . Opportunity and education are essential elements in doing so. We can lead by example; but we must do the same for ourselves. If you WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS on the Congressional line, I promise to make every effort possible to do so!

The Me Nobody Knows
I am a quiet but thoughtful individual. Usually, quite clam..I believe that I am a compassionate person. I practice yoga with a mix of Pilates. I like to ride my bicycle. I like my jeep and I like my dump truck. I love my children. I enjoy the outdoors; I live in the woods and I am a good steward. I like to cut my own firewood and I clean my own chimney .I like to build cozy houses; I consider myself a good carpenter. I am a very good designer..I have an odd gift of being able to think three dimensionally. I like to solve problems; if it is not related to my trade, I like to look at things from both sides. There is nothing like putting the shoe on the other foot to help see the issue from both sides. I believe that I am very objective. I believe that most of our problems are very interrelated. And lastly, I believe that I am the best choice to represent you in the 19th Congressional District of New York. Chris Gibson said it the other night in the debate of October 22nd,"You know the House is going to remain Republican." Well, now is your opportunity to put a real Independent in office to represent YOU!This November 4th, VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE let your vote make a difference for you. Go down the Congressional line and WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS. Write my name down on a piece of paper and take it with you to your polling place! EVERY VOTE COUNTS!

Guess who is going to west Africa to help contain Ebola?
I was clueless, but in a 20th October editorial in the New York Times I discovered that Cuba was sending a relatively large team of doctors and nurses to help contain the deadly virus; 460 to be exact. The World Health Organization has been training the response team. I think that's great! We should all read the article. One other thing; even though we have isolated Cuba from the international community for over a half century, American students attend medical school there with the backing of our government.I have a friend who just finished medical there; he thought it an amazing experience. The other thing, which I would think is extremely embarrassing to the Bush Administration of 2005, is that Cuba offered a rapid response team to aide the Victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Considering Bush's response to that national disaster, I consider his refusal more a shame. Ebola is an international security problem and concerns all nations..Hopefully, we will respond internationally as health care providers without borders or political divisions.
I just had to go to funny movie
I just had to go to a funny movie tonight; it is just too much..another school shooting. You know that is over 160 incidents of school shootings in our nation since 2000. What I really want to know is: when is the National Rifle Association going to stand up and help solve this national disease? The usually arguments against a national gun control law are of no value to the parents who have lost a child due to gun violence. The N.R.A. is not Congress; however, they have a lot to say because of their enormous influence..their campaign contributions to our "representatives" in the House of Representatives and the Senate. No one is asking to revoke our right to bear arms; the people who believe in some sort of gun control are just asking for common sense solutions. I am a loving parent and the violence today in that town near Seattle, Washington caused me to weep.

Slipping into the abyss of fear?
The incomprehensible violence in Canada over the last couple of days is tragic. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. Those events show us how vulnerable we all are. I keep asking myself ,WHY? Can these episodes be stopped? How? When will they stop? What is their goal? Is there a political solution? We must find a core solution to the crisis of ISIS. We cannot wait years and years. My family coat of arms, perde sed caute the latin for fight with caution sometimes is applicable;but in this instance, we must fight with a very heavy hand using all of our available resources.

The Debate was not Complete without the Voice for the People
Tonight 's debate did not include everyone. As an Independent I did not participate. The organizer of the debate called me yesterday. The head of the news department said that I did not meet one of the criteria because I was not a candidate on the ballot. A Write-In is a candidate. The fact is that an Independent has to get almost three times the amount of signatures (3500) than a democrat or republican (1250) just illustrates how unfair the process of getting on the ballot is. An Independent has to petition later than democrats and republicans and basically gets ignored in the media. As an idealist, I thought that there was an outside chance to participate in the debate: there are 126,000 registered voters in this district alone who are not affiliated with any party. I think that those voters deserve an alternative . I believe that the media has an obligation to the public to present varying points of view. ( especially from an independent who has been trying so hard over the last two election cycles managing over 5000 signatures; 2887 in 2012/2156 in 2014). An Independent Write-in is a candidate and should be recognized more in the media; actually. I was referred to as the Write-in candidate from 2012 is back on an National Public Radio program in July. This November 4th WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS FOR CONGRESS an Independent who will represent You, not party politics! Let your vote make a difference; don't let money buy representation!

Not a Wasted Vote
I do not like to waste things ; as a matter of fact I enjoy recycling and reusing things as much as possible. I am sure of one thing I would never ask you to waste your vote. This election cycle please vote your conscience not the lesser of two evils. I believe that I am the best choice; unfortunately, I have little media attention. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I feel quarantined by the media. I tried to get into tomorrow night's Time Warner debate but did not succeed. Write my name down on a piece of paper and bring it with you to your polling place this November 4th and WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS at the bottom of the Congressional line column where it says write-in. In order to help you, I will post a sample ballot before the election. Each county in the District also has its own elections but the ballot will still be consistent with regard to state and federal candidates . The most important thing to do this November 4th is to vote. But most of all, remember A VOTE FOR ME IS A VOTE FOR YOU!

More than just the 19th Congressional District of New York...
We must end the dysfunction in Washington. I believe that one cannot disagree with the three principles that I have been running on for Congress over the last two election cycles. Those principles are: government must have a conscience, the two party system does not represent the people, and money should not buy representation. Both candidates have questionable issues around money, whether its donor contributions or access to personal wealth. Democrats and Republicans do not represent the people if they did forty percent of the electorate would not be affiliated with any party. Government is designed to serve the people: it has not done its job. As an independent, I will represent you not party politics. I will work hard on all the issues that concern us. Remember, on November 4th...WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS FOR CONGRESS. You will be glad that you did. Vote your conscience; LET YOUR VOTE MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Money can't buy you love, or can it?
Money is a very touchy subject in everyone's lives; but it is especially touchy when it comes to politics. Since one of the principles that I am running is that MONEY should not buy representation, I am very concerned about its influence in this particular congressional race. Obviously, I would like to be your choice in the 19th Congressional District of New York, because I believe that we should begin to re-establish a balance in Congress for the people and that I would work hard in your interest. In an article in The American Politics Journal, I ran across an editorial written by Leon Felkin that I thought was particularly appropriate . I will give you a direct quote from it. DEMOCRATS and WEALTH: Democrats believe in the concept of "equal distribution of wealth" even if they happened to hoarding a pile of it.They justify this by the fact that to do their job requires that they live a certain style that allows them to associate with the influential." Of course, this is actually meant to be funny, but is it? I do not think so. Why? Sometimes people flock to money like bees to honey. The fact that a candidate who has access to more money than almost any one of us can count; sometimes blinds their vision. I believe that democrats have been blinded by enormous wealth. Quite frankly, I question the motives of their candidate. I believe that if you agree with me that you will WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS on the congressional line, an independent who will work for you. I have worn out my boots working; I will wear out my shoes in the halls of Congress working for you. Join with me !

Some Things Are Just Our Own Fault
Every two years there is a General Election, and part of that election is for the House of Representatives , all 434 seats from the varied Congressional Districts across our great land. And almost always, you do the same old thing ; you vote republican or democrat. As Maurice Hinchey, the beloved Democrat, told me in 2012.."the rest are just out for themselves." I had told him that I was running on principle, three to be exact. I have already told you those. In my opinion , the voter ignores the fact that democrats and republicans do little to help the people and a lot to help themselves. Their pockets get lined with money from big donors; and the voice of the people gets crushed. I want to elected to Congress by you so that I can be your voice without big donors and without big money. I will not out source jobs; I will work hard to find solutions to bringing good paying jobs to our district. I will not vote to shut down the Federal government and risk the prestige of our nation aboard or the loss of work and salary to thousands , I will not be a party to our nation being held hostage by party politics. I will work for campaign reform. I will push for equal pay for women (my mother always made more than my dad.) I will always vote to fund planned parenthood: I am a firm believer in a woman s right to choose. I will always vote to fund the Center for Disease Control and Prevention; I will always fund our Public Health and Infrastructure. I believe in protecting the environment; especially, from the potential of pollution of our precious water supply by fracking. I fully support Social Security and Medicare. I believe in a living wage not a minimum one. I believe that higher paying jobs will stimulate the economy; higher revenue more spending power. I believe in universal health care. I will always vote to fund security for our embassies around the world. I live full time in the district; I am not a millionaire nor do I have access to huge amounts of money. I live modestly and I believe that I can be a great representative for the 19th Congressional District. Why? Because I am YOU! Let your vote make a difference this November 4th. Go down the Congressional line and WRITE-IN...THOM JENKINS..I promise to let your vote make THE DIFFERENCE IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES!

Congress and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention are Overlooking One Thing
The missing link to exposure of the Ebola virus is incidental contact. This problem is enormously serious. It is necessary to establish national protocol at all entry points in the United States. The preparedness and ability to respond to this health crisis is imperative. I grew up in the era of polio; my mother was a registered nurse, she is probably rolling over in her grave at the amount of carelessness that is putting her "sisters and brothers" in harms way. The thoroughness of precaution is our most important ally in defeating this deadly virus.Contain the virus in west Africa by discontinuing commercial air travel ; have restricted air travel for American health care workers.

You Are Not Paying Attention!
The role of government in our daily lives is right there in front of you . There is a crisis; it is just not at your doorstep, yet. Prevent it; pay attention. It is so evident . Fifty to seventy percent mortality, breeches of so-called protocol, the very nature of the unpredictability of the Ebola virus , the unpreparedness of our national health care network, healthcare workers exposed without effective protection all these issues point to one thing. We do not have all the answers. As smart as we think we are, we have to be more than careful in our approach to a solution to this problem.

I am concerned about Ebola
As a person who wants to represent you in Congress,I am concerned about the health crisis posed by Ebola. In previous post, I mentioned that Ebola is unpredictable. That means that anything we think we know about Ebola may be changing. We must NOT overlook anything. We are not prepared to deal with a potentially deadly outbreak of this dreaded virus. We do not have enough equipment, trained personnel or a clear plan to deal with such a health crisis, let alone enough isolation units. The protocol to deal with this virus was not followed in Dallas, Texas. Now another nurse is infected. We must immediately have funds mandated to the various health organizations the Center For Disease Control, the National Institute of Health, and the World Health Organization to get Ebola under control. We must educate thousands of health care workers; we must have the best equipment to protect our health care workers and other public employees who may incidentally come into contact with potentially infected individuals. This could potentialy become a serious worldwide epidemic. We must pay attention. Critical thinking at the early stages is imperative; for example. everyone s immune system is different, therefore..an individual could have symptoms of this virus with a varied temperature other than what the CDC guideline is. Unpredictable is just that, unpredictable. Nothing can be overlooked. The health of the public is at risk. We cannot be casual about this deadly virus..Ebola has spread to three continents outside of west
Africa; as the United Nations mentioned today, this problem must be contained within sixty days or we risk 10,000 new cases a week. It could actually be much worst. WE are taking action in west Africa; we must not overlook our own nation!

Where do you stand ,Mr. Jenkins?
I left my blog on line from my 2012 campaign, and I have NOT varied much at all. To refresh...I believe that the most precious commodity we have is our ENVIRONMENT. WE must protect it at all costs ..we should be conscious of it all the time. I am a believer in climate change; there are ways that we as citizens can help reduce the effects of methane by simply composting our food waste. I am against FRACKING; it is an uncertain practice that can ultimately contaminate our water supply. Some measures have been put in place for municipalities not to allow fracking. ..a step in the right direction. I will always vote against fracking. I do not make a profit from it nor would I ever accept money from fracking entities. Since I basicly eat organic the best I can, I am in favor of labeling G.M.O food sources; I strongly support local farmers. I am in favor of returning the 8.1 billion dollars in food stamp cuts. If you ever had the need for food stamps, you would understand just how important they are in your monthly budget. There was a point in my life, after a serious illness that I needed food stamps. The fact is that food stamps do not totally supplement the food needs of a family; it does what it says ,supplements. Families need more and so does an individual; they spend more normally. So by cutting food stamps, the government cuts their spending power, especially if they are unfortunately making a minimum wage. Which brings me to my next stand. I firmly believe that the concept of a minimum wage is a poor one; it should be a living wage. Do you remember the concept of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Well, it is very difficult for a person not making good money to appreciate it. I am not an envious person, and I do respect a person who has done well; I do not know too many millionaires who are complaining. I am in favor of extending unemployment benefits for those who cannot find a job. While our economy seems to be doing well, most of us are not feeling the benefits, jobs are actually scarce. We need good paying jobs: we need to stimulate our economy, meaning yours and mine..The well off will always be well off. We are the ones who need a better revenue. The real problem is the type of job. So what kinds of jobs are here in our district now? How are you doing financially? What kind of jobs in the past made our district more viable? Now let s think about that on a national level..Education,.vocational training , technology, alternative energy,manufacturing..and much more. There is never a simple solution; I will work hard for you in solving this serious problem. We have allowed large corporations to take jobs away from our nation, and to add insult to injury these corporations get away with not paying billions of dollars in taxes..who picks that up you. End corporate loopholes. And with that we must add ending corporate contributions to political campaigns. If you want . change, you have to change the end game..change the landscape..put an Independent in Congress who is totally outside the bubble. One of our greatest barriers to change is INEQUALITY..That is a very big word ; one that has significant impact everywhere. In today s world, it can be anything from your right to vote, your right to ask for a better living wage.your right as a woman to DEMAND equal pay for equal work; I actually think that women are great problem solvers, I have worked with women who have come up with solutions to problems that a man would never think of! I am PRO-CHOICE; I believe that a woman s right to choose is her ultimate right to PRIVACY. It is unfortunate that while ROE v. WADE protected this right ,it was not made constitutional. I strongly believe in funding PLANNED PARENTHOOD. I am a believer in universal health care. I believe in elevating American education. With regards to foreign policy, I believe that we need to reaccess our foreign policy. We must do what we say we will; however, I believe we must rethink what that actually means if we are to remain ONE OF THE MORAL LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD..
Quarantined by the Media
With just TWENTY-ONE days before the elections..I feel quarantined by the media. An NPR station said on the radio just the other day, that there would be a broadcasted debate and that the WRITE-IN candidate THOM JENKINS was NOT going to be participating. Well, I was NEVER INVITED.I have made an effort to contact those involved. By ignoring an Independent, even though I am a WRITE-IN , is ignoring the interests of over 126,000 people not affiliated with any political party. That is not only unfair but not a rational decision unless the object is to the stack the deck against the people not affiliated with any party and force them to vote republican or democratic or just not at all because there is no other candidate to represent them. It is not just simply because I believe in fairness ; it is because I believe that I am the best candidate to represent them and whoever else decides to vote for me whether or not they are a republican or a democrat . As an Independent who is a WRITE-IN this election cycle and was also in 2012, I think people should hear what I have to say in an open form, if you can call it that, because I believe that I can win the Congressional seat in the 19th Congressional District of New York. What is my reasoning ? A VOTE FOR ME IS A TRUE VOTE FOR YOU! My goal is to represent the people and work together with both parties to protect your rights, to protect our environment , to protect our nation, to ensure that there is equality for everyone.

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue..
According to Alf Evers, in his book Woodstock, History of an American Town, my mother s family arrived in this land on 24th of August 1682 on William Penn s ship The Welcome. I am no outsider. My ancestors were in the military fighting battles in the American Revolution and have fought in other battles through World War II. Others served in peace time. I did not serve in the military. I protested Viet Nam and Iraq; that does not mean that I am not a patriot. I respect all members of our armed services. At the time , I disagreed with government policy; dissent is a another form of patriotism..According to my father, some of his ancestors were farmers, one of those Thomas s in his line owned, the land that the Capitol is built on; it is called Jenkins Hill. His father, my paternal grandfather, had been a coal miner, the family coming originally from Wales. I am a proud American and it would be a priviledge to represent the 19th Congressional District of New York in Congress.

The Heart of the Matter
Do you know why you are a Republican or a Democrat? I know why I am an Independent; I am not affiliated with any political party. I believe in the three principles that I am running on: Government must have a conscience, the two party system(meaning the two major parties) does not represent the people, and MONEY should not buy representation. I believe that the electorate does not pay enough attention to its role in choosing its representative . I would like to believe that electorate appreciates the freedom that it has; I would like to believe that the electorate acknowledges its power. Voting is not some game you play..The person who is true to his/her conscience is the true voter, and the person who cares about the future of his/her country. I believe that party politics do not represent the will of the people. I believe that we must change..When Mr. Obama won the Presidential Election of 2008, the People were actually in tears, tears of joy for him personally and tears of hope for CHANGE. He inherited a mess and by 2010 things had shifted against him in Congress. The 2012 Election found Mr. Obama in the White House once more but Congress was still stacked against him. 2012 was the first time that I ran for Congress; I left my blog on from that campaign with a few interviews and some video. You see,I do not want you to think that I just came out of the woodwork. I think that I can win this election. CHANGE is what I am looking for, and I am looking for a change in your attitude. WRITE-IN THOM JENKINS..write my name down now on a piece of paper and stick it in your wallet or memo it on your cell phone. Let your vote make a DIFFERENCE!

Then, there is Iraq...
After two wars in Iraq , we have spent the lives of thousands of our brave men and women in the military, countless numbers of wounded and permanently disabled service members. The cost in blood and sweat far out weighs the trillion or more dollars that these conflicts have cost. Yet , here we are again not only engaging in air strikes in Syria but back in Iraq as well ...to aide a country whose American trained military could not defend itself. What is the cause? In my view, and just about everyone else who is able to analyze the problem, the Maliki government was unable to control sectarian violence. What violence is that? I could not believe the statement that Dick Cheney made in the media.."we did not know that there was sectarian violence in Iraq!" It is not possible, I thought. Didn t he do his homework? Didn t he read the position papers that are put in front of him every day? A mute point now; but nevertheless not to be overlooked. At any rate, Mr. Maliki has done great damage to his country and wasted the grave sacrifices that the many have made. Mr. Maliki did not include the Sunnis in his government; he dismissed the Sunni military leadership, including the rank and file. The result is that a majority have sided with ISIS. No wonder ISIS has become such a threat ...American trained Sunni military fighting with captured American weapons in both Iraq and in Syria against Syrian moderates and Iraqi nationals . who now seem to be overwhelmed. What a complicated mess! And of course, the corruption and all that American money, almost 104 billion dollars, that certainly did not help. The same parallels can be seen in Afghanistan. We cannot export our brand of democracy with its current flaws and expect perfection in other government, especially if there is so much cultural diversity. What is the solution? Perhaps, it is a partitioning process, better than the one after World War I , that gives regional identity , freedom, security and autonomy to the various people who live there. This problem is not just going to go away. A permanent solution must be forged with the satisfaction of all concerned and ISIS will have to be included. The Palestinian problem will have to addressed as well. The solutions to those issues will aide humanity.

Ebola..an International security problem
Ebola is one of the most deadly viruses known to mankind. Now and then, there is a small outbreak; much to our dismay, this time it is large. There have been 3900 deaths in west Africa, one death in the United States. Many more people are infected; we are not prepared. We,the international community, are trying. This disease is unpredictable; if we do not pay attention and take every caution, we could be facing a very serious problem. It has been mentioned in the media that if the disease is not contained it could effect 1.4 million people in west Africa alone by January 2015. That is a crisis..Ebola effects international travel and the international economy. Judging from what I have observed, we are not adequately protected. WE MUST EDUCATE THOUSANDS of health care workers and make sure that they are absolutely guaranteed of having the best training and equipment. The United States is sending 4000 soldiers to west Africa to help contain the epidemic . We must be vigilant. WE must stop this and prevent these types of issues from happening as best we can.Until then, ebola remains an international security problem as well as an economic one.
A National Security Problem
What has happened to our moral compass that we have allowed a terrorist organazition to become a threat to humanity and the global economy? The cause of the problem is,from my point of view, that two parties in Washington put bandaids on things, and the effect is that the infection never heals. Congress and the administration have allowed a pre-existing condition to get totally out of hand. By ignoring to aide Syrian moderates some months ago, turning our backs on the fact that over 200,000 people were being killed by the Assad regime, various groups have morphed creating ISIS, the Islamic State in Syria. This organization grows daily as if it were a cancer. ISIS strikes like the Nazi blitzkreig of World War II. They kill without mercy; they commit atrocity after atrocity. Crimes against women are many and varied; one can only imagine. Oddly enough, it took the beheadings of two Americans for the Administration to act. U.S. air strikes have been numerous, and yet have done minimal damage in derailing an ISIS advance. The city of Kobani, on the Syrian border with our NATO ally Turkey, is almost gone dispite 46 air strikes from U.S. planes. Another humanitarian catastrophe ....Saving, rescing the innocent citizens is not part of our mission! This type of action is weakening our effectiveness as a moral leader of the free world and strengthening the position of the enemy. ISIS is serious problem ; left unchecked, ISIS is a national security problem and moreover an international security dilemma. The answer lies in asking the right questions and getting to the root of the problem . The United States must lead by the best example possible!

The Key
What is the key to unlocking inequality in this country and everywhere else in the world? I think that it is access to a good education. You would think that the United States of America would be leading the way; but the fact is we are not. We lag behind the rest of the world in many areas of education. Education in this country could improve by leaps and bounds by taking a step backwards and teaching the standards of the English language. Children are graduating from high school who do not know how to communicate clearly. We are creating a permanent underclass of people who do not have the skills to get a job with a living wage. We must elevate the standards in our educational system so that everyone has a fair chance at a promising future and the ability to make the good choices. The states and the federal government must be held accountable.

No security with so much inequality
When I was a kid , I was in the Boy Scouts. There came a time when I had the honor of being in an escort for Eleanor Roosevelt. She came to the church that I was a member of to give a speech. I carried the American flag..I went to the wrong place..I was really upset . After her speech, there was a reception. As a member of the escort,I got to meet Mrs. Roosevelt, I was very apologetic for my mistake..I will never forget what she replied," Tommy, one day you will do a great service for your country." It wasn t clear to me what she meant at the time; but somehow, here I am trying to make a difference by running for Congress. I have been a life long Democrat before becoming an Independent. I believe that Independents are necessary in Congress, especially in the House of Representatives. The House has ignored the People. Legislation , so important to so many , has been ignored . Equal pay, gender inequality, the health issues surrounding women, elevating education, passing a minimum wage ( it should be labeled a living wage), unemployment benefits, reducing food stamp program are just some of these issues. What do they all have in common? I believe that one word can answer that question, and that word is INEQUALITY. Eleanor Roosevelt said decades ago,"there can be NO SECURITY WITH SO MUCH INEQUALITY." I believe her words have been amplified in today s world. Everywhere you look, this cause and effect relationship is evident. If you elect me to the House of Representatives, I will work patiently with both parties to end the causes of inequality.

Money should not buy representation
The title of this post is one of the principles that am running on this election cycle. There are three in total; the other two are : government must have a conscience and democrats and republicans do not represent the people..I will talk about those principles in another post. On the 11th of July of this year, I did an interview with Allison Dunne on NPR (local affiliate WAMC),.. some of you may have heard the discussion. Basicly, I said that money should be removed from politics. You probably think that s funny. It s not. I believe that elections should be publicly funded; I believe that large campaign contributions are a form of bribery and that is against the law. Publicly funded elections, meaning a fixed amount of money taken out the electorates federal income taxes would limit the amount of spending and give others, namely independents, a chance. It would help level the playing field. Presently, enormous amounts of money are spent on campaign mailings, political consultants, and campaign advertisements on television and more. To date, between the incumbent Chris Gibson and his democratic challenger Sean Eldridge, they have raised over 5.2 million dollars to pay for such activities..I have raised one hundred fifty dollars and I am trying to get some more money for signs. Can you imagine the impact if I win by spending less than one thousand dollars? When I called the League of Women Voters and spoke to one of their representatives, I asked :"how come I did not get invited to the debates..?" She replied that I was not serious because I was not raising piles of money and that I was a write-in . A write-in actually is a candidate whether he or she has money or not. The electorate just has to remember the person s name, I am an independent candidate running as a write-in. By having publicly funded elections, we create a fairer competition between candidates..Elected officals are public servants ; I do not see any reason why the F.C.C. could not further level the playing field by insisting that the television and cable networks run a fixed number of rotating public service announcements for federal candidates during every election cycle during the news hour at dinner time. They should be listed in the entertainment section of newspapers so that we can find out who we want to listen to. After all, we the people have to approve the message...at the ballot box!

the election is just a month away
One month from today, there will be another election. It is sometimes called the midterms. Even though this is not a presidential year; we cannot overlook the national importance of this election. It is not just about our congressional district (of course, there is the election for governor and other representatives as well as other local races.); it is about the future of our country. The most important thing you can do this November 4th is VOTE! Make voting a habit not a chore!! Try and remember one thing that a WRITE IN is a CANDIDATE and a vote for me is a vote for you! Over the next few weeks, I hope that you will continue to read my posts and come to the conclusion that I am an excellent alternative to the republican or the democrat. It is my hope that you will write -in THOM JENKINS for the 19th Congressional District of New York.

The importance of Politics and Policy in our lives...Cause and Effect?
Okay, cause and effect is something that we learn about in elementary school. So how can we relate this to politics and policy in our daily lives? It is quite obvious that almost everything we do is somehow related to the politics in Washington and the policies that are "passed " on to us or not.Congress is the most powerful branch of government...just think about the substance of the legislation that goes before Congress. Some of that legislation concerns the quality of the air we breathe, regulations pertaining to the food we eat, the water we drink, the energy we use, even the minimum amount of money some of us can earn, the list goes on to the right to chose , the right to chose the person you love , the right to hold on to our entitlements of social security and medicare that we have paid for all of our lives, the right to have affordable healthcare. The list goes on and on. Unfortunately , cause and effect relationships permiate our overall foreign policy and various security issues namely ISIS and ebola as well. The point is all these things matter.. shouldn t you be concerned?
